Want to take your stone tool making skills further? You’ll want to book onto the advanced workshop with Dr. James Dilley. If you can consistently make flakes and simple tools your next step will be to start understanding how to detach flakes more predictably.
Making longer and thinner flakes are key to creating tools such as axes, bifacially flaked knives and scrapers. To get to this stage requires an understanding of edge preparation and striking platform management. These are the areas that will be covered during the workshop, as well as sorting any troubleshooting issues. The main aim is to improve technique and understanding of tools such as antler hammers and abraders. Recognising faults or potential issues through the process of Flintknapping will save trouble later on. It’s best to remove these as early as possible. By the end of the workshop you’ll have a much better understanding of how to read the flint and know where to hit to get the flake you want, and most importantly how to prepare the striking edge before you hit it!
